Question on Valet Key for 2002 WRX

Hey guys, I managed to lock myself out of my 2002 WRX with the key in the ignition. Tried all the usual tips (coat hanger etc.) but nothing worked. I bought the car 4 months ago and the PO gave me an extra subaru branded key with a black plastic part on the handle which the actual key does not have. He claimed it was the trunk key however I've tried it on the trunk and it doesn't work on that or for unlocking the doors. Research indicates it may be the valet key, however if it doesn't unlock the doors what's the point? Was I given a key for the wrong Subaru?
