Why do Brazilian athletes tend to go by a single name?

Post Body

Most athletes you come across go by two names—LeBron James, Tom Brady, Harry Kane, whomever you like. Brazilians, though, do it differently. They tend to go by just a single name, and as I've begun watching more and more soccer, I've wondered why. I think of people like Marta, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Vinicius Jr, Raphinha, the list goes on.

Is there a reason why this is a thing? Is going by a single name something that Brazilians do colloquially?
