A different kind of Pokemon strategy!
Post Body

We Showdown users play under several Battle Clauses that regulate our games and prevent us from using "un-competitive" sets: things like Evasion boosting moves, Swagger, or Moody. Whether or not these individual clauses are necessary to keep the meta healthy or needed to keep battles fair is beside the point. I wanted to go full rebel, and break every single clause.

What? Break every clause? What does that even mean? Surely Showdown won't even let you find a game if one of your pokemon is carrying Swagger, or has Baton Pass paired with Speed Boost and Swords Dance. The game simply won't allow you to start a match with a pokemon carrying Sheer Cold or Minimize.

I had to find ways around this. There had to be SOME way to game the system and let me do the things Showdown didn't want me to! I saw a video by a poketuber named Renny T, titled evasion c'llause. He managed to boost his Evasiveness stat in a regular battle by having a Shuckle use Sweet Scent against a Mega Sableye. Magic Bounce reflected the move off Sableye, and Shuckle's Contrary flipped the Evasion drop around to give himself a boost. I was blown away, you aren't supposed to be able to break the Evasion clause! Maybe there are similar things you can do to break other clauses!

I called up Renny T (who I knew from a previous collab video) and told him I wanted to build off his evasion clause video: I wanted to do the same thing for every battle clause! We started brainstorming and eventually figured out how to get around the:

  • Swagger Clause (Can't use Swagger)
  • Baton Pass Clause (Can't Baton Pass Speed and another stat)
  • Sleep Clause (1 pokemon put to sleep per team)
  • OHKO Clause (Can't use Sheer Cold, Horn Drill, Fissure, or Guillotine)
  • Moody Clause (Can't raise and lower two random stats in one turn)
  • Evasion Clause (Can't use Evasion boosting moves)
  • Endless Battle Clause (Can't create a scenario in which the battle never ends, i.e. Funbro)

And here is the product of that. First, I go over how we tackled each clause or mimicked the effects of banned moves. Then I show a replay in which we break every single clause in the same battle! I'm extremely happy with the final product, and I'd love feedback on it. What could we have done better? Are there other ways to break these clauses? I'd be overjoyed to hear /r/stunfisk's thoughts on this!
