Alternatives to capture cards

I am new to the whole streaming thing and have been learning things as I get my setup ready.
From Google and YouTube, I know I can run OBS ndi to stream without needed an expensive capture card.
I got to wondering if it would be possible to connect a dual pc set up to file share and download screen share software to accomplish the same thing a capture card or OBS ndi would.
Everything I find on Google is suggesting the first two methods. Has anyone ever tried this?
