Today I parted ways with my girlfriend. When we started dating we were both on a journey of not drinking. I was about 4 months in and she was 2. Unfortunately she began drinking again a short while into our relationship. At the time I didn't think much of it and some moderate drinking around me would not really be an issue. The problem is the moderate drinking turned into benders really fast. Every opportunity to drink when I wasn't around was taken. She misses a dinner one night from being drunk and another day was still too drunk to attend work the following day. She didn't want to stop either. So now I fully understand how relationships are ruined by alcohol. I know my decision to stop 445 days ago was the right one but it's something that can't be explained to a drinker and it's also a decision that they have to make themselves. Maybe this relationship ending might make her look harder at herself and what she has lost, but I can't be there to watch it anymore.
