Making bricks from clay
Post Body

So Im in central florida and have commenced construction on an experimental dwelling idea that will be constructed exclusively using materials on my property. On my property there is approximately 40’ of elevation change and at the lowest point, in my backyard, it ends at a lake shoreline. I have excavated into the hillside about 55’ from the shoreline and two feet down i hit a layer of clay. Its is a cream color with reds marbled through it and i decided to attempt making bricks out of it. I built a brickmould, formed about 20 6” x 6” x 12” bricks and let them dry in the sun. Once they were hard enough to handle i fired them in a 55 gallon drum that i built a rack in and used wood and charcoal with a fan pumping in air from the bottom. I drilled 1/2” holes around the drum and covered the top. I can fit 6 of these large bricks in at a time and let it burn overnight. I wanted to make about 40 bricks this size and then go down to 4x4x8” bricks. How can i properly test these for strength and how hot will i need to get the bricks and for how long? Thanks!
