Giant plot hole in The Institute *Spoilers
Post Body

So I read about 100 reviews on this book trying to find somebody complaining about the enormous, in-your-face plot hole but could not find any complaints. I have a really hard time believing that I am the only person who saw it so I thought I’d post here!

It ruins the whole book for me. Basically, the housekeeper Maureen, risks her life to get video footage of the back and back end. Yet right before her and Luke come up with that awful escape plan (that could’ve gone wrong in about 10,000 different ways) Maureen is in Vermont on vacation. Nobody is watching her!! In fact, the book makes it a point to say that Ms Sigsby realizes she doesn’t even know that much about the Maureen!

So, instead of going back to the Institute and coming up with a plan for Luke to dig under the fence and then go trucking through miles of dark woods to escape, maybe Maureen should have just made 100 copies of her IRREFUTABLE PROOF and mailed them to every news agency around and every police station in Maine. She literally has proof on a USB drive that kids are being tortured!! On top of that, she knows exactly how to get to the Institute and can give whoever she wants the actual map coordinates (Luke mentions knowing the coordinates at one point in the book, so if Luke knew what they were Maureen absolutely did.) Honestly, even if she did not have the proof, she was making allegations of child abuse that somebody would have investigated!

She is not worried about any of the higher ups coming after her for turning them in, because she immediately kills her self as soon as she goes back to the Institute and gives Luke the USB drive. Mind you, this set off a chain of events that eventually ends up getting most of the kids in the Institute killed. Whereas, if she had just gotten the authorities involved and shown them proof and brought them to that location everyone may have been saved (again, it’s not like they could turn her down, they would absolutely have to investigate allegations of severe child abuse and torture)

But, instead of doing any of that, she leaves the whole thing on 12 year old Luke???? And their entire plan rests on him being able to dig himself out from under the fence which literally takes him hours and he could’ve been caught at any point! What????

Also, it makes no sense that he would be able to do that in a top secret government facility but I’m not even gonna get into that part.

I love Stephen King and have read everything he’s ever written. I actually really liked Luke’s character and I loved the premise of the story. There were some other fairly large plot holes (if anyone is interested ask me in the comments) but the one I am complaining about is the biggest and there’s no way to enjoy the story with that plot hole because now it doesn’t make any sense!!

I was really disappointed by this book and feel it is probably one of the worst things I’ve ever read by Stephen King.

What did you guys make of this book??
