Isolation and mental breakdown

In The Shining just three people were in an isolated hotel cut off by the weather. Do you feel in this situation it would be very easy to suffer cabin fever leading to a mental breakdown without any help from the supernatural. In comparison to the book, there is a view the Kubrick's film version implied Jack Torrance was having a mental breakdown rather than being influenced by the evil ghosts.
