A town disappearing without noticing

After reading Salem's lot do you think it credible a town could disappear without attracting too much attention which was implied in Salem's Lot. If large numbers went missing from one town, would this not attract the attention of the authorities who would search the town and friends, relatives and work colleagues would be concerned.
