UW question about hypersensitivity type I

The question basically says that a kid was stung by something and developed wheals, then mom administered diphenhydramine, but the kid continued to get worse. Question is simple, it asks about the mechanism of type I hypersensitivity. My question is, why didn't the diphenhydramine stop the reaction? What am I missing?
