I’m not going to attempt to create another legendary white edge rusher from Wisconsin narrative, or even suggest that rookie OLB Nick Herbig needs to play 25 or more snaps a game this season, but he’s looked much better than a fourth-round edge rusher would usually look, even in the preseason.
He had two big-time rushes vs Buffalo — a pressure on Dion Dawkins early and a strip sack on the backup in the third quarter and even forced a false start on Dawkins (might have forced a hold on Dawkins on another play).
To say Herbig wasn’t the headliner of this draft class is an understatement, but I’ve been the most impressed with him through two preseason games. Obviously that isn’t worth much, but as someone who enjoys seeing the younger players making progress, and getting a sense of where they’re going, I’m really excited about what we’ve seen from him so far.
