I'm running a study where I am watching sports matches and noting how many time an athlete experiences a specific thing, lets call it x. The aim of the study is to say that athletes in this sport experience x thing y amount of times per match on average. I'm trying to figure out how many matches I need to collect data from in order to make a statement on the population as a whole. I took a very basic intro to stats class but I'm not sure how to select a sample size that will be adequate to show statistical significance from scratch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
