One of the most amazing scenes in The Last Jedi is after the amazing combat scene with Rey & Kylo vs. The Praetorian Guards. We see Rey try and Force pull Anakin's lightsaber only to be countered by Kylo's Force pull. Giving us this amazing shot of the saber suspended in the air between, and as Kylo and Rey increase the intensity of the force pull we see the saber vibrating and shaking and twisting as Rey and Kylo pull on it from each end until it explodes from the sheer weight of the force being exerted on it.
So here is my hypothesis - in that moment that lightsaber decided it was no longer aligned with Rey, it would no longer serve Rey, and it was never mean't to serve Kylo. The lightsaber is where the Force is at harmony. Not the light side, nor the dark side. The Force is in balance, in the middle. The Grey. A harmonious balance between the light and the dark. Now Anakin's saber's reluctance to obey Rey's call to it, may have something to do with the fact that Kylo just used it to kill Snoke. The Force Awakens only lends weight to this hypothesis, another moment where Rey and Kylo were both trying to call Anakin's saber, only to see it come to Rey.
This story is headed into the Grey Jedi, there are going to be some paradigm shifting reveals.
