What's up with notes taking apps? Why are there so many of them? How are they monetized?

Everyone seems to be developing some kind of new tweak of a notes taking app; evernote, wunderlist, one note, google keep, 53 by paper; and I'm just talking about the main ones here.
Is it me or is this note taking app thing overdone and super saturated? Why are so many people doing that?
