How do they work while two people are in conversation? I was binge-watching stone star trek stuff and I remember I think during a TOS movie, I don't remember which part, they were talking to aliens and they just mention that they can understand each other coz they're using a translator. But there's no physical translator there. They only show it properly in part VI during the trial. And during many scenes with aliens throughout TOS era movies they just talked to them them English and everyone just kept doing that. I thought that's because they have a translator in their ear which in real time translates it. And in the movie they're showing it as English for us. But with part VI: The Undiscovered Country, it was clear that translators are actually physical devices which actually lag while translating and they're not real time. So how did they converse during all those previous movies?
