Haven't played for two years, should I do vanilla or go straight to modded?

Hey all

Last time I played Starsector was between 0.95a and 0.95.1a, I had a fairly extensive playthrough beating the redacted, the story but not going into colonies at all.

I'm looking at jumping in again and I wonder if enough has changed that I should do another vanilla run or should I go for mods like many suggest after first playing vanilla?

Thanks in advance
