My idea for new DLC campaign - Niadra vs the Protoss

TL:DR Kerrigan made a broodmother, told it to destroy protoss, now its drifting around expanding its brood. New campaign of 6 missions that you can play as both the Zerg attackers and the Protoss defenders.

Hi, Im Cold. I came up with an idea for a story set a few years after Aiur is reclaimed, that I think would be really interesting. It would star Niadra, the broodmother created in HotS as she puts her overriding directive of destroying the Protoss into action. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JqVMmUmDQ0)

So my thoughts are that Niadra, having been directed by the Queen of Blades to destroy the Protoss (she just meant the ones on that ship, but Niadra takes it as the entire species), has spent the last few years drifting around in a quiet corner of space, expanding her brood and assimilating never-before-seen species. She would have no affiliation with Zagara, living purely for the purpose Kerrigan created her for.

After the events of LOTV happen, and perhaps shortly after Covert Ops happens, She can suddenly reappear in Protoss space making a beeline for Aiur. A mass of mutant Leviathans surrounding an infested Protoss vessel. The Protoss scramble to fend off this sudden independent Zerg attack.

My idea for the structure of the campaign would be 6 missions, where the player can either play through as Niadra, attacking the entirety of the Protoss race, or Artanis defending against this new threat. While the overall structure of the narrative would be the same in both, events conspire differently as the player does better than the opposing commander. (ie an objective early in the campaign will be controlled by the player, changing what the next missions entail) My thoughts on the structure:

  • a prologue where zerg scouts (mutas, evolved swarm queens, eventually some bigger organisms) encounter a probing force from the Protoss (with pheonixes, scouts, later some arbiters) are led by Selendis to determine if Zagara is behind this attack. It would be a special space only mission, like the Hyperion mission from HOTS.

  • on both sides of the end of last mission, Niadra declares her intentions. Zagara will contact her saying stop, Niadra does not listen as her directive is from the Queen of Blades (we will assume acsended Kerrigan is otherwise indisposed and doesnt come help at all). The first mission would be Niadra establishing a hive cluster on the surface, with the Zerg side having to beat back the various factions and divide them, whilst the Protoss side would be stopping the clusters connecting. The purifier technology would be clogged by Queens in orbit, to stop instant beam death on the attacking force. Whichever side the player is on will have the stronger foothold at the beginning of this big fight.

  • The second mission of the campaign would be about adapting to the enemy, with the opposing side mindlessly trying to stop you. The Zerg will want to evolve to combat the new unity of the Protoss, while the Protoss will want to activate ancient defenses, by clearing old infestation from the Overmind (as they have spent the majority of the last few years just rebuilding their towns). As the mission goes on, whichever side the player is should have special abilities come online as they are activated, such as revealing DTs, AOE resistance against the destructive technology of the purifiers, immunity to offensive spells from the Zerg and more AOE to clear the small numbers of the swarm (zerglings, broodlings, locusts etc.)

  • Mission 3 will introduce the Terrans to this conflict in an unexpected way. A fleet of medivacs are closeby to the system, heading to some sort of humanitarian aid mission on another planet. The Zerg bring them into the Aiur system, and the fleet of super medics, with their experiemental tech crash land on Aiur in neutral territory, with Niadra wanting to assimilate them, and Artanis wishing to rescue them. The player will win this no matter what side of the campaign theyre playing, bolstering their forces for the final battle. Either the Zerg capture them, mutate them into something beneficial (I was thinking they would be grafted onto the back of super tanky Brutalisks, that can AOE heal injured Zerg units nearby) or the Protoss rescue them and make new scientific advances with their tech, buffing their zealots and other biological units to be much better at living, and treating the victims of the initial Zerg attack, increasing their defense reserves.

  • Mission 4 will be a special micro tier. Both races will have 2 options to take out a key part of the enemies infrastructure. Both choices are micro missions in the same way as Belly of the Beast in WOL or the first Aiur mission in the finale of LOTV. Unsure of the details of these 4 potential missions, targeting the infested vessel with Niadra on it or infiltrating the Exectuors palace of Aiur are possibilities). This will lead into the finale of this campaign.

  • Mission 5 will be a big heroic defense from the Protoss against an unrelenting wave of enraged, mutated Zerg. Obviously, if the player is the Protoss, theyve obtained many advantages in the story at this point, with the same being true on the other side if playing Zerg. Therefore, reinforcements will arrive en masse for the other side. If playing the Zerg version, The Terran Dominion will arrive to reinforce their new Protoss allies, stopping this new Zerg threat here and now. If playing as the Protoss, Zagara will decide that now is a good oppurtunity to crush the Protoss and gain some unique qualities from assimiliating Niadra into the swarm, warping in with a regiment of Leviathans to add to the already sizeable attack.

The epilogue will have Niadra either fleeing from her routed forces, or sitting triumphant on top of the ruined defenses before mysteriously disappearing. Either way, she will have last been seen with a probe approaching her with U.E.D. stamped on the side. In either scenario, the new Zerg swarm will fall apart, more quickly if the player was the Protoss.

So a total of 14 missions with both sides versions (2 x prologue, 2 x mission 1, 2 x mission 2, 2 x mission 3, 4 x mission 4, 2 x final battle). Niadra is brought back into the story and we get some more Protoss vs Zerg action.

Thank you for reading if you got this far. I hope this can inspire Blizzard to make more DLC campaigns, or maybe a talented map maker who is looking for ideas. Another possibility is allowing 2 friends to play this campaign against each other, with each missions results affecting the rest of the campaign organically, warhammer-style.
