Could a community-run team work?
Post Body

On a couple occasions I've seen people here on r/starcraft suggest some kind of Reddit-affiliated or based team. That got me thinking of a project I read about a while ago, called [MyFootballClub](www.myfootballclub.co.uk) - a project to buy a football/soccer team in England with small individual donations and then have the donators run many aspects of the club. As you may gather by the rather tersely worded statement on the front page, that project hasn't been entirely successful - but maybe it could work in Starcraft? I was thinking of something like the following:

  • Members of r/starcraft, TL, etc. pay something like $20 to become members of this project
  • The members would decide things like what players to pursue, the name/identity of the team, what leagues to enter/not, etc... almost everything could potentially be here, but maybe some stuff would need to be handled by "professionals"
  • The donated money would initially be used to pay players and staff, but in theory the team would get sponsors and eventually become self-sustaining without new donators (note: this would not be an investment where the goal is to make the "donators" more money!)
  • Positions like coach, media people, lawyer, whatever could be hired with the donations or taken by volunteers

Any thoughts? I'm not suggesting that I could do something like this myself, because I have almost no relevant skills and not enough free time, but maybe other people would be interested...
