Not sure how popular this will get and this is going to come off as a rant but here it goes.
I have worked at DTW airport selling CLEAR for a year now (which by the way for the barista I feel your pain when it comes to people not having things ready for payments or IDs).
Anyways, I work with predominantly Muslim people. This is not an issue, although I am gay and many are conservative I view my jobs as simply a job. The issue I have had was the few Palestinians who told me I was âdrinking the blood of childrenâ and âsupporting genocideâ because I go to Starbucks or McDonaldâs.
Let me start by saying that I actually stopped going to Starbucks for a while because I respected my coworkers by not drinking it front of them. I also figured I was spending so much money at Starbucks to the point I just knew this could be like a reset and I could try new coffee shops in the airport.
This went well when I got free coffee from one place airport - until the new manager found out. They are really nice people but their coffee sucked most of the time.
About a month ago, after stopping sometime around November last year I started to go back for a few reasons.
Starbucks is not the best coffee in the world but itâs the most consistent. I am a salesperson and to get my energy going I need an iced espresso that I can order on the app and get through security fast and not deal with waiting in line.
I turned 25 (which feels great because you stop caring what people think) and listening to girls I work with who are barely 20 talk about world issues and how I need to not support every fast chain in the USA is not important to me anymore. Whatâs important is that I show up to my job, feel decent and make money. I like my job but not having Starbucks made it somewhat less enjoyable.
I swap the cup because the manager is Palestinian and we get along for the most part.
