Can't play online via steam friends

I recently picked up this game for my younger brother (he played on mine during the beta and loved it).
We were playing on the nightly and could easily play with eachother via steam friends. Now that 1.0 has released he is unable to connect to me or me to him. We don't have mods at all and in his options the play wirh steam friends check box is un-checkable. Anyone else have this problem/fix? All help is appreciated.
