How to decrease Starbound's CPU usage?

I was trying to figure this out because running both the client and server on my machine cause 100 percent CPU utilization and substantial FPS drops. So, I have a few questions:

1) Is it possible to host using the "client"? Or is it strictly a client-server architecture?

2) Which version of Starbound performs better? 32 bit plain, 32 bit OpenGL, or 64 bit Open GL?

3) Are there any settings I could change to decrease CPU usage?
