I was under the impression that all health insurance plans at least covered an annual physical exam, so I tried to be a real adult and scheduled a check-up.
But according to Cardinal Care's explanation of benefits, "annual preventive physical examinations" are completely covered, while "annual routine physical examinations" aren't covered at all. I didn't even know these were different things, and now the pending bill is enormous -- how can I find out if I screwed up?
During that check-up I took the same blood tests that I've had every year for the rest of my life (when I was on my parents' insurance). Cardinal Care covered half of them completely, and charged me $100 for others, and I'm not sure how they decided which. I read everything on the Stanford pages about insurance, but they're super vague and didn't really answer anything. I also tried the HealthNet site, which is very detailed, but it seems to be screwed up in odd ways. It took me an hour to log in the first time, and the links for basic documents are often broken.
Am I just an idiot? Probably yes, but in any case, shouldn't this information be out there somewhere, and how would I find it?
