Does Coolers work? Struggling with the heatwave

Does Coolers really work? My wife cant stand the warm weather and i cant really sleep with a fan on. I have dust mite allergies and i start to sneeze and my nose gets runny after keeping the fan on for few hours!
We are thinking about getting a Cooler but have heard both good and bad about them. Some says there work nice but some say its a waste of money.
