Safe and Affordable accomadation for a couple when traveling to Downsouth

So me and my wife are planning to visit downsouth prolly around next month and we are looking for clean and safe budget accommodations in down south.
We thought of spending less on where we are crashing and spend more on the experience to make the most out of the visit.
Also suggest what we can do, must visit places and must have experiences etc in downsouth for a couple as well
