The Great Corona Crowdsourcing 4.5 - Writers hate him! One cool trick...
Post Body

Day, uh, 20ish of the crowdsourcing. Previous post here. tl;dr reddit co-writes Bowsette.

We just wrapped up the contest for the Bowsette model on the community discord server, and the winner was u/thelonelyphonebox. Thanks again to all the users who submit models! Phonebox will be leading a team of experienced artists who will be putting together some poses for us. You can take a look at the model here: Vanilla and Dark (phonebox won the right to choosing which colour palette is going to be the default, and he chose the vanilla one).

With our artist team set up, our next steps are to get to writing.

On our previous post, there were a couple of comments about fleshing out Bowsette's personality, and I think there's plenty to work off of there. She's wild and fiesty, she's cocky and confident, she knows she looks great and flaunts it, she's a bit childish and spoiled at times, she should have that mean edge that Bowser has, and she's not so much a slut as someone who knows what she wants.

How to Write Personality for Dummies

While we never did get around to collating the big Writing Manifesto that we planned to, there have been plenty of times in the past when some of our best and brightest have dropped some knowledge bombs on us, so I've gone digging and fished out some tips and tricks to writing.

u/nomoreatheismspamplz's Touchstone Strategy

Here it is directly from the man himself. Goderator nmasp, creator of many well-achieving waifus, has a pretty simple way of making sure his lines are interesting and unique to his characters' own voices. What he does is he first puts together a list of traits unique to his character (kinda like what I did some paragraphs up ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ), and then you pick a in-game scenario and write a line based on each trait.

So if I use the Must Strip case as an example:

"You better take something off before I tear up your clothes myself!"
Wild and Fiesty

"Bwa ha ha! Did you really think you were going to beat the great Koopa King?"
Cocky and Confident

"I know you'd rather look at a beauty like me, but you'll just have to put up with ~name~ instead! Bwa ha ha!"
She knows she looks great and flaunts it

"Ah, I won? Man, I am so great at this! Take that you losers!"
A bit childish and spoiled

"Don't worry about being embarassed, sucker. No-one's gonna want to pay attention to an ugly person like you!"
Mean

"Do something to impress me and maybe I'll make you my Koopa Queen."
She knows what she wants

You don't need to use these touchstones - you can make your own, depending on what your own image of Bowsette is.

u/UnderscorM3 and Using Italics for Emphasis

This batch of advice on how to translate emphasis in speech to emphasis in text was written by M3, who also did writing for Aimee, Natsuki and Wii Fit Trainer, all characters who ooze personality. We use text to indicate italics, but even if you use a format like reddit's or discord's, all your lines are being QC'd by humans and we'll fix it for you.

u/nomoreatheismspamplz on u/spnanon's Minor Advice

The image may have the quality of the potato, but the advice here is absolute gold. spnanon is the writer behind some of the most successful waifus in spnati, and he has probably written more lines for spnati than there are lines in the bible. As great as it is to hear a character talking about how someone's jewelry/shoes/cap/ribbon/gloves/necktie/etc reminds them of their own, these very unexciting moments are perfect for expressing aspects of your character. Experts suggest using accessory lines to tell us about your character's personality, and minor lines to tell us more about your character's backstory.

u/spnanon on Writing Smut

This one's actually from an episode of the podcast (1:07:47 if the link fails). You should probably hear exactly what spnanon says for himself, but, basically: "Would anyone actually say that?" and "Write horny lines while horny. Don't write normal lines while horny.".

Various other ideas

 • Trust us, we've seen it all. We get it, the gloves are off both literally and figuratively. Unless puns and dad jokes are in-character, don't bother.
 • Write first, regret later, but never backpedal. We're taking anything and everything - don't think too hard about whether your lines are good or not. Even if you're not producing the crème de la crème of r34 strip poker smut, as long as you're giving us something to work with, we'll sharpen the edges and trim the fat for you.
 • Keep it simple. Don't spend an hour writing a line for when the stars align once in a blue moon on the 7th saturday after three horses neigh the soviet union anthem in unison. We wanna hear what your character says when they seem some big ol anime tiddy.
 • Less is more. Don't ramble, don't write essays, don't pick the biggest words you know. Make your lines punchy.
 • Show, don't tell. We don't need to read "I am strong and scary" to know your character thinks they're tough and strong and scary. "Are you afraid of me? Well, you should be! Bwa ha ha!" is a much more interesting way to say that.

Alright coach, I'm ready. Sub me in.

Woah there cowboy, you might be ready, but there's a little more we have to do behind the scenes before we're ready to open up shop. In fact, some of you probably skimmed past the lingo like "cases" and "accessory/minor lines", but that stuff is important too. Tomorrow we'll introduce the tool you'll be using and walk you through how the game actually works, and why that makes writing a walk in the park. See you all then.
