Why do people avoid "deep" or self reflective questions or topics?

Post Body

I notice this a lot especially on social media like Reddit and Facebook. I try to ask a question to get people to think not necessarily to answer. Yet when I hold up a mirror people refuse to look at themselves, laugh/deflect/act unaffected, or punch the mirror instead. People respond with "lol what are you smoking? Must be some good sheet." I can't make or control anyone. Sometimes I just have to tell myself it is what it is and that assholes are going to asshole. I just thought that bringing up a certain topic might bring about change and people might be more aware of how they act. Instead it feels like people get angry, mock, or ignore. I just want to help people be more aware. Maybe slowly gradually improve society. Maybe people might react with more compassion as opposed to indifference or anger. It fills my heart with sadness to see how indifferent people are sometimes. I'm not saying I'm immune or different. I do proceed with awareness at least and understand when I am feeling that way. I at least ask myself if there is anything I can do. I can't change people I can only proceed with my own awareness and control how I act, think, and feel.
