I woke up to what sounded like a person screaming outside. After opening a window I quickly realized that it was an animal, so I took my phone out to record it.
This was at around midnight (in early May) in Eastern Massachusetts. It's a wooded residential area that's near a fairly large (for Eastern Massachusetts, at least) forest reservation. The animal made this noise on and off for about 10 or 15 minutes before moving on. It was hard to judge how close it was, but during the recording it seemed to be within a few hundred yards of my house.
I often hear great horned owls around here, but I've never heard anything else at night. There are foxes, coyotes, and fishers around here, though it's rare to see them near the more residential streets. I'm pretty sure this was a fox based on the other recordings that I've heard, but is it possible to identify whether it's a Red or Grey Fox? By the way, the other dogs you can hear barking in the recording are neighbors' dogs that clearly had also heard the animal.
Here is the recording: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0iCCJnC26RO
Thanks!
