Would like to get into this game

Had it on steam for a while, haven't played it much, but it looks really cool. Some things confuse me though. Mainly, the combat. I started off on normal and everywhere I go everything kills me. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing in battles.
Any tips for that and other tips for a newb?
