I (23M) was ecstatic to receive the email. I had been selected for a PhD program in a prestigious institute. It would start about 5 months away. There was just one issue though, I had to learn a foreign language I hadn't studied in nearly 7 years.

Then I remembered my former teacher, who had first taught me that subject. She had taught me really well then. Her personality was no nonsense and wouldnt tolerate tardiness or any silly mistakes. It was one thing if you were naturally bad at something; but if you were failing purely cause you weren't bothered enough to learn/ being lazy, that wouldn't go unpunished. It could be rewriting the incorrect, squats or in rare cases, ruler.

When I contacted her, she was ready to tutor her once favourite student at her home. With her children well settled abroad, she had just retired from teaching at 50. She had more than enough time to spare. However she didn't hesitate to tell me that I wouldn't be treated differently for being an adult and would be subjected to discipline if found slacking. I assumed wrongly that it would just mean a gruelling course; something I was used to. May be an odd swat with a ruler here and there; nothing too hard. Boy, was I wrong.

She lived alone in her large apartment. She greeted me with a hug and commented how big I had become. She was right; I was 5'10", 2 inches taller than the scrawny teen she had last met. And nearly 7 inches taller than her. Regular weightlifting had blessed me with decent muscles. She on the other hand was quite on the heavy side.

First day was worse than expected. Turned out I had forgotten a lot more than expected; even the basics. She said, " You obviously need to work a lot. In my experience, physical discipline is a good teacher in itself. If you want to learn 2 years worth in 4 months, you will need it. If you disagree, feel free to find another tutor." I silently nodded in agreement.

Physical discipline at the age of 23? This logically should have made me run away but I stayed. She was my best hope at learning that language, there weren't much options that could teach me that in so less time.

She laid down the rules

1. I was to arrive exactly at 10 am for a 3 hour session. Tardiness would be punished

2. A Daily 30 minutes test on previous days session. I was supposed to score more than 25/30

3. Every Friday would be a full length 100 marks test where in I was supposed to score at least 85/100. The next day ie Saturday, I would receive my marks and appropriate punishment.

The first punishment I got was on day 3, a Wednesday. I (foolishly) thought I wouldn't need to revise and hence scored 19; 6 less than I should have.

She was rather unamused . "You were lazy then, you're lazy now. All brain and no drive. Don't worry though, I know how to get to the seat of this problem" she said patting my butt. I had butterflies in my stomach when she said that; I didn't remember the last time I had been punished this way. Or rather never.

She pulled an armless chair in the middle of the room and sat on it. " Over my knee" she said, pointing at her lap. "This was a daily test, so you can keep your jeans on. If I have to punish you for your weekly test, you'd be spanked on your bare bottom." " Yes ma'am " I replied an bent over her lap. She adjusted my denim covered butt till she was satisfied and started rubbing it. "I'm putting a lot of efforts into tutoring you, and I expect you to do the same. Is that clear?" She punctuated with a 3 slaps. " Yes ma'am " . "3 slaps per mark lost. Count them or it won't count." SMACK. I felt a sharp pain on my left buttock. " One, thank you ma'am." SMACK. This one on my right. Before long, her hand had smacked my butt 18 times. My butt was warm by the time she was done.

"Now getting up and don't dare to rub your bottom unless I allow" she said smacking my butt in the middle. "You have a ample butt, this punishment probably wasn't enough. Take off my slipper" she said crossing her legs. I got on my knees and first kissed her manicured toes. "Thank you for taking out time to punish me. I really deserve it." I said before handing her the slipper, like it was the most natural thing to say. "You very well do" she replied. " Now get back into position. 2 swats per mark lost ".

SMACK! It caught my ass in the middle, the pain rising. "One, thank you ma'am." The slipper hurt worse than her hand. SMACK. " Two, thank you ma'am." I kicked my leg a bit; this was hurting more than I anticipated. She delivered the next 5 on the same spot on my left, the next 5 on my right cheek. She then ordered me to get up. " Your butt is not done yet, bend over the chair. Stick that tush out."

As I did that, I saw her get out a wooden paddle. It was about 16 inches long slight less than 2 inches wide and half a inch thick. She patted my butt with it, raised her hand and brought it down hard. I jumped and rubbed my bottom; it was the first time I had been smacked so hard. "Get in position. NOW. Since you got up, this won't count." I obeyed sobbingly. I couldn't believe the position I was in. At the age of 23, I was bent over being paddled like a petulant child with my ass sticking out.

After her 6 swats were done, she asked me do 10 squats holding my ears. I was to repeat, "Sorry, I'll do better". She then made sit on a hard wooden bench and write all the mistakes. I kept squirming evey now and then but she wouldn't let me get up till it was done.

I couldn't help but wonder, if this was the punishment for a minor daily test, what would I face if I slacked on my weekly test? What more was in store? I hoped I wouldn't have to find out.
