Hello engineers!

I've been out of the game a few (before planets), and now that I've come back I tried to build a vanilla APC on land (creative, just for blueprints). My question is: How do I start building on land? I mean, what block should I place first? I've tried with the wheels but they fall on the ground. I've built some scaffolding to keep the "chasis" high enough to build it and weld the wheels so the chasis can hold itself, but everytime I try to weld one or two wheels, scaffolding loses balance and everything goes down.

Another problem I'm having is that I can't place blocks close to me. I have to go very far from the construction site because the block "blueprint" or "ghost" appears very far from my and I can't barely aim to the place I want to place it (maybe I just missed some button to get the ghost closer on the controls screen?).
