What was with their obsession with Brian Boitana?

I was a child in the 90s so I don't know what was special about him. Rewatching all the show and see he's referenced in the spirit of Christmas, a regular episode, and the classic song "What would Brian Boitana do?".

For guys who love taking the piss out of famous people what caused their seemingly genuine respect for him? Did he do more than figure skate or do something special? (Not saying being a professional skater is easy but SP has taken meaner shots at people of all skill and success levels).

Just curious as I have no reference to who he is.
