Middle Eastern American here, and I am sorry in advance if this question comes off as racially insensitive or ignorant, I apologize in advance.
However, between living in LA Koreatown, a love of Korean literature, film, and food, I have had what I consider to be an “above average” exposure to Korean culture.
I have noticed that there is a recurring theme in Korean entertainment depicting life in S.Korea as challenging and grueling in a way that I feel is different from American life. Like, no redemption, and your life is irrevocably damaged by one error.
For instance, not getting into a good a school is often depicted as a blow that people never recover from professionally, or despite making serious efforts to get out from under debt, it often appears impossible to do (and common). Is this correct, or dramatized?
