So I'm from London, UK. My girlfriend is from Port Elizabeth. I actually got the chance to visit. Wow, it was just incredible!
When I first landed in Johannesburg, I actually felt a bit emotional that I was in a completely different part of the world. Everyone was very friendly helping me find the right gate to get to P.E. On the way over, it was incredible seeing all the beautiful mountains. Such vast, open spaces the like of which I've never seen before. When I landed, we were literally the only plane there and all I had to do was pick up my suitcase and then meet my girlfriend two seconds later.
It is so peaceful. I thought this would be weird, as I'm so used to the hustle and bustle of London. It was just incredible. Everyone is so relaxed, there's no mad rush for everything. When it went dark at night, it was truly incredible to be able to see thousands of stars and the actual Milky Way?!?! Here in London there is so much light pollution you're lucky if you see more than 5-6 stars when you look up.
We went to Addo National Elephant Park, Graaf Reinet and National Mountain Zebra Park. Every different park has its own amazing feel and vibe. I love how the vegetation and trees/flowers change so much. One minute I'm surrounded by orange/red sand dunes, the next I'm in a thick green forest, then climbing up mountains to look down and see such a stunning, sweeping landscape. To see animals in the wild like this was so beautiful. It really was like living the dream. London Zoo is so rubbish in comparison!
I can fully understand how the braai is a big thing now. It's the equivalent of going down the pub to meet your mates here in London. What was different in P.E. was that everyone knew everyone else. It's just all so laid back. I love rugby, so it was great that they show all the matches on TV for free. I've also become a big fan of Barry Hilton and managed to see him when he came to London recently (if anyone's wondering, it's called GJ's Bar in Wandsworth).
Oh, and the beaches! All we had to do was drive for 20 minutes and we were at the seaside. We probably came across five people in two hours of walking. No tacky fairground rides or loads of shops, just the beach and the beautiful sea.
Finally, Wimpy restaurants. When I was a kid, they had Wimpys here in the UK. They were a cheap version of McDonald's, until that came over and dominated the market. In SA they are amazing! Beautiful choice of meals, amazing milkshakes, live rugby, such a wide range of high quality food. I was amazed!
This stereotype of SA is totally wrong. Whenever anyone says "Oh but SA is a dangerous place" I always correct them immediately. Every country in the whole world has its dodgy parts, including London.
I know I'm riding on the wave of holiday euphoria and things are probably different when you work there, but I just think you have an amazing country. I'm extremely tempted to move out there on a permanent basis actually.
Thanks everyone :-)
