By consolidating the Zulu vote into one party, he’s ensured that a continuation of ANC is possible through its own coalition party with people who are in agreement with ANC policies.
if you look at some poles, an ANC-MK coalition meets a likely 57% of the vote.
ANC was set to go down to atleast 54% by next vote but with the introduction of covid, they were more likely to go down to 51/50%.
I hate to say it, but it’s a good political strategy
