When is it best to sound male

I am quite new to sounding and done it a few times, I’m confused I see people sounding while flaccid and while hard what’s the proper way to do it, I do for pleasure and also medical reasons.

I had a urethral catheter in at 16 due to having brain surgery and since then my urine stream sprays when my foreskin is pulled back I discovered using a larger sound a while ago, I’ve got some restrictions there, I’m looking at treating it with weekly sounding, so what’s my best way of doing it while hard or while soft?
