Playbar with HDMI switch

I want to get a Playbar, but my TV doesn't have an optical out. I don't watch much over-the-air TV; I mostly just watch stuff on my DVD player and Roku.

So I've been looking around at HDMI switches. This one has an optical audio out. Would I be able to plug the DVD player and Roku into it, and send the audio to the Playbar? Would that create a delay in the audio?

Some time ago, I actually found a post on the Sonos message board with someone saying that this setup worked for them, but somewhat disconcertingly, the post seems to have been deleted. Here's the link.
