What's the strat for housing and building location?

Does there need to be a bed for every person? Should build flatrooms or dorms?
Additionally, whats the general guide on building placement? How far can housing be from work place?
Lastly, whats the easiest way to know if you have enough food for x days? What's the difference between rations and food? Why build kitchen? and whats the difference between tavern/feast room?
