Dumb question, but if I use a backpack as my checked bag instead of a suitcase, what should I carry my carryon in?

I normally travel with a suitcase and a regular backpack I can fit under my seat to bring a few necessary toiletries and things for the plane, but if I use a traveling backpack I can’t carry a regular backpack through the airport. I know this is dumb but what should I use instead?
