I see a lot of people posting about trips they've taken for months on end and I'm really fighting the urge to just drop everything put my stuff in to storage and the screw off for the next month or two in SEA. To be honest I did plan to take a 2 month vacation, while I was in the midst of changing careers, I was an autoCAD designer for 7 years with over 160 hours of saved PTO at my old company. So, I applied for government jobs due to being a contractor and thought the process would take months for me to get in which would allow me to put in my notice and leave.
Unfortunately, the job applied for sent me an offer 3 days later and I had to start the week after that. Fortunately I managed to push it back to July 1st, but now I'm in a new field (The one I wanted) and no PTOπ. So, I'm back to square one fighting the urge to travel until I gain experience and certifications in IT to travel again. I hold a clearance so, itll make it easier to find work when I get back. But I plan to stay at this job for maybe 2 or 3 years for certs and stuff.
Currently, I have 8k in the bank, but I had to use 4k of that to move. I know that I'm when my lease is up I'm going to throw everything in storage, let my parents use my car while I'm gone and just pay for the bare necessities like my phone bill and student loans. One day, I'd like to work overseas at least once in my professional career, but for now traveling will have to do. Also I'm 32 now so, I'm aged out of most work visa programs. And traveling will be hard to do since I only get 2.5 hours of PTO 2 weeks.
So how do you guys do it? Teach me your ways because I don't want to wait till I'm old and gray to travel.
