Comparison of Energy Management Systems for Grid-Tied Hybrid System
Post Flair (click to view more posts with a particular flair)
Post Body

Hi all. New to the sub and solar. I am actively collecting quotes for a grid-tied hybrid system with whole-home battery backup (and generator compatibility). I'm eyeball deep in research on all of the hardware, system design and technical considerations. I'm a pretty technically savvy person, and this stuff is still a lot for me.

My Main Question: I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to resources for straightforward comparison of the major systems' energy management features/software/apps -- i.e., how the various platforms let you monitor and manage your connection to the grid, use of the battery, etc. I know the names of a lot of them (Enlighten, My Sol Ark, FranklinWH App...), but am having trouble comparing apples to apples.

I know it's a long post, but that's basically the gist of it. The rest is context:

The Issue: I'm having trouble even isolating what to search, because it seems like in some designs these systems are tied to the inverter (AIO, e.g. Sol Ark) or controller/gateway/manager/[other words here] box (Enphase), battery (Franklin) or battery/inverter (Tesla). There doesn't even seem to be much common nomenclature describing the software (energy management system, monitoring system, control system, etc.) or hardware component it's tied to (see list above).

Basics About My System (Search): I haven't even decided on DC optimizers vs. AC microinverters yet. I'm familiar with the general pro-and-con arguments there, and it's enough of a push for me right now that I'm looking more at the versatility, intercompatibility and modularity of the downstream system to tip the scales. That, and I'm really trying to avoid the "I wish I had known that" stuff.

My use is roughly 18 kWh/yr, my state has full retail price net metering. So far, my main candidates are an all-Enphase system with the IQ8 microinverters, 5p batteries and associated hardware. The other candidates are things like a Sol Ark 15K with Tigo (or other) optimizers and Homegrid battery. I'm open to other configurations and hardware, though.

Grateful for any help anyone can provide.

Edit: Clarified word salad.
