Can I use a job offer from an outside employer to leverage my current employer for a raise (I am a hospital social worker)
Post Body

I am in an interesting situation, I have worked for a large hospital system for the past year which has been both challenging and rewarding. The pay is decent for an LSW but it could be better (as all social work jobs). Anyway a little back story… before moving into medical social work I had the opportunity to help a Community Mental Health Center open up in my State’s largest city (started with just me and one other individual). I did this for a few years and it was a success but did not have an open position that I could use my license in which is why I left (plus crazy long hours). I recently had an individual reach out to me who had noted my experience and would like me to help do the same thing for their company. I am talking with various members of their talent acquisition team and have another meeting with them next week because I feel we should all keep our options open. The part that I am blinded by is how much more they are offering me compared to my current pay ($35k base salary more in addition to bonuses, which the base alone puts me in the 6 figures for income). I do enjoy my current job and I learn so much, but I feel as though this offer is hard to pass up due to the increase in income. Would it be a bad idea to bring this to my leadership’s attention, explaining I would like to stay, but I also believe I deserve a raise commensurate to my worth and expertise? I don’t even care if they match it, but I preferably would like them to meet me in the middle. The part that worries me is I am dealing with a hospital, so would they really care enough to keep me with how large they are? My boss is constantly trying to get me a raise, but the gears of the hospital turn slow.

Any thoughts are appreciated, I think I am in shock that I was given this offer…

What state do you live in? I know transplant social workers make decent money in SoCal/NorCal. I’m finishing my first year of my MSW, however, I’ve worked in case management for a while and our social workers starting at around $85k
