How do I handle, "maybe' responses to invites?

This happens often. So I invite a friend to come do something tomorrow and they say, ok as long as I can get xyz done in time.
Now I can either rescind the invite or I'm basically locked in where I can make no other plans and am basically taking a chance to waste my day.
My friends that I invite to things are all considerate and kind people, so I don't think there is any game-playing here. Am I missing a graceful way to handle this?
