New here but heard you guys might appreciate this. Sorry for the low quality shots. I believe this is recrystallized snow. It snowed 5 days ago. Now in single digit temps, very low humidity and several days w/o a breeze at a fairly high elevation. My theory is that momentarily sublimated water vapor forms and precipitates these fragile crystals just above the layer of hard pack snow under them as they quickly freeze again. The scale is difficult to convey in the photos but these are finger and thumb tip sized. Tonight they have much more than doubled in size as the temps dropped. I'll try to get some sunrise shots before they melt or go sublime in the sunlight. If anyone knows what is really going on here I'd love to hear a more technical and/or scientific explanation. Thanks for your time in reading.
Great shot! I love snow.
