Is pivot grabbing out of shield not a thing anymore or am I doing it wrong?

Or is it the awful online lag? Because everytime I try to pivot grab out of shield it always take like a second, it just doesn't seem worth it.
EDIT: also can I exit online without getting a frozen black screen please?
