DLC - especially fighting game dlc where only one to two characters and one to two stages are added at a time do not take the entire smash development team to create. In fact often times a ‘live team’ will be designated to work on a game post-launch in order to bridge the gap between launches.
So yes, the preliminary smash dev team finished work on Smash 4 in 2014 while parts most likely started working on the baseline for this game, and others worked on DLC.
This is further evidenced by Sakurai stating hat he’s been working on the game for 2 years. The being the chief term here. Seems small amounts of work were being put in but the ‘real work’ started around 2 years ago now.
I know most people are just being cautious because they don’t wanna be let down - but this isn’t how a company announces a port frankly.
