Hello everyone, I'm a 26yo college graduate with a bachelor's in Economics. I graduated during the pandemic and have been completely lost in what directions I need to move forward with my life.
After graduating college, I initially took a well-paying gig in the tech sector. It was during a time when the tech boom started and everyone's offers were through the roof. The role itself was not technical at all and more HR-focused, so mostly soft skills were needed. I was doing well in the role until I got laid off in 2022. Since then, I job hopped around various entry level gigs (payment analyst, sales, etc.) until 6 months ago, when I decided to join my father's business.
He's been operating for 20 years and is a distributor for a very niche category of car accessories. He has a partner in Europe who handles the manufacturing portion while he acts as the distributor for the North America market. Initially the business model was B2B only, so the margins were very small unless the volume was high. But, about the last 8 years or so, my father began to use eCommerce as a B2C source channel through websites like Amazon (FBA, PL), Shopify, Walmart, etc. Now those sources (primarily Amazon PL) have become the main revenue driver and our annual sales sat around $6 - 8 million in the last couple of years. Now I completely understand that revenue is not profit (I would not be writing this post if it was profit lol), but my father has done well himself and lives comfortably. He does want me to take it over one day (meaning I wouldn't have to "buy" him out of his business) and grow the business bigger.
Now, the part where I feel lost is because I'm quite unsure about the longevity of our business. Amazon is our primary revenue source, but Amazon FBA has been getting worse every year (higher fees, more problems, etc.) the influx of Chinese wholesalers. We've been trying to get more customers to our own Shopify stores, and while we do have some success, the avg annual revenue is only roughly $260k, which after COGs and fees, is not that high. Also during this economic downturn, the stress of owning my own business is quite high. Luckily nothing has changed too much for us, but I've heard of businesses shutting down overnight. If I'm being honest, I'm not too sure if I'm even cut out for being a business owner.
Now I'm at a crossroad. I'm thinking of potentially going to grad school for MBA (don't have the best undergrad records tho tbh), learn a skill (like quality engineer), or continue and try to build our family business. If anyone has insights into the e-commerce market or just any simply advice, that'd be appreciated. Thank you.
