I own a resale business, and we will be starting to take in a new type of product very soon, but it’s still within the same field or realm of the products we already do.
One of my employees is asking if he would be getting a raise for having another “job” to do.
Mind you, this will at most take up 5% of any one employees time, and they are all paid hourly. There is no additional work that will be done.
Training for them to take in this new product will be 15 minutes at the most, since it’s fairly similar to what they are already doing, but not exactly the same. There is no requirement for them to have any sort of previous knowledge on the product either, it’s fairly straight forward.
So my question is, at what point do you give employees raises based on their number of “duties” if they are paid hourly?
I should also note that I already pay my employees over a living wage in my area, and there are similar businesses to mine in my area with a starting pay that is half of what I pay my full time employees.
