No cry sleep training methods

Do they exist? If so, what are they? Do they work?
My newly 5 month pld baby only gets a nap longer than 20 minutes in if he's being held. He's decent at night but naps are terrible. He's fed to sleep, which I know is bad, but that's the only sure fire and frankly easiest way to get him to sleep.
I cannot handle listening to him full out cry, looking for gentler methods with no crying.
