Advice on starting with 5.5 month old
Post Body

So we tried Ferber once around 4 months and it was clear he was too little, so we waited until about a week ago to try again. I did modified intervals where I would go in, pick him up, and settle him before putting him back down. For an hour (my limit) he cried off and on, and the fact that he would go up to an 8 and then come down to a 2 on his own makes me think he's ready this time. On the last two long intervals he was SO CLOSE to falling asleep but didn't quite get there so I said enough for that night.

I want to try again tonight, and as much as I hate the idea, I think full extinction would be more successful for him. The interval checks seemed to really mess him up. So that's the plan tonight. Now, what I'm wondering is if he does fall asleep, what do I do when he wakes up? Feed and put back in the crib?

For background, he has never slept in the crib. We resorted to cosleeping out of sheer necessity and so I don't want to be too hard on him since this is a huge change. He has NEVER once been successfully transferred once asleep into his crib. That's why we cosleep. So once he wakes up, do I feed him and do extinction again or just cosleep for the rest of the night? I'm not sure what to do but I can't imagine letting him cry it out all night long. I also have zero idea how long he might stay asleep initially since he is used to sleeping on a person. What are your thoughts?
