Iām a big ā80s slasher fan and as a kid, that was basically all Iād ever rent from the video store (I had cool parents and grandparents lol.) Iād always heard about this movie but none of the stores in my area had it for rent. I just watched it for the first time last night and here are my thoughts:
- It definitely is a mean-spirited slasher. The killer is off his/her rocker and seems to have a great time mutilating people.
- The score is somewhat annoying but I actually liked it, especially during the opening credits.
- This is a slow moving slasher. I did find myself getting bored at times.
- I liked the gritty look of this one. It has more of a 70s look than an 80s one.
- The killerās motive is lame and lazy. I guess itās realistic because there are definitely some crazy, jealous people out there, but it felt rushed and sloppy.
- The movie is best known for its downbeat ending and Iām sure it was very shocking at the time it was released. It goes against the āslasher movie rulesā in every way. Since I knew for years that this film had a downer ending, I wasnāt surprised to see how it ended. However, if I had went into blindly, it wouldāve really caught me off guard.
Overall, Iād give this a 6.5/10. The ending does save the film from being forgettable but the majority of the runtime is a slow, somewhat dull entry. It takes itself quite seriously, which I do like, since I donāt care for really goofy horror movies. I just donāt see myself rewatching this one any time soon.
